Hsinchu City Wins Top Honors at MOTC “Golden Safety Awards” for Third Consecutive Year; Acting Mayor Chiu Chen-Yuan: Committed to Continuous Traffic Safety Improvements
On November 21, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) held its annual Golden Safety Awards ceremony, the highest national honor for traffic safety. The Hsinchu City Government once again took first place in Group II of the Traffic Engineering category, achieving a remarkable three-year winning streak and highlighting the city’s outstanding results in traffic safety improvements. In addition, Hsin Ke Junior High School received an “Outstanding” rating in the junior high division of the Traffic Safety Education Site Visits, while Weng Mei-Hsuan, a volunteer at Hsinchu Elementary School, was recognized with an Exemplary School Crossing Guard Volunteer Award, further adding to the city’s list of accolades.

Acting Mayor Chiu Chen-Yuan stated that the city team has actively advanced Mayor Kao Hung-An’s policy initiative of "Smooth Traffic" by continuously improving the overall traffic safety environment. Upon taking office, Mayor Kao established a dedicated Traffic Improvement Task Force, which convenes monthly Traffic Improvement and Road Safety Meetings personally chaired by the mayor. These meetings incorporate input from expert committees to analyze accident types and root causes, and to implement precise and targeted measures through the 3E strategy—Engineering, Education, and Enforcement. Chiu emphasized that all departments and the Road Safety Working Group are fully committed to creating a safe traffic environment that residents can rely on.

According to the Transportation Department, winning first place in the Group II Traffic Engineering category for three consecutive years demonstrates MOTC’s strong recognition of Hsinchu’s exceptional performance in traffic infrastructure. To build a people-centric transportation environment, the city has proactively implemented intersection improvements to enhance pedestrian safety, including: Reducing crossing distances; Expanding corner pedestrian zones; Installing refuge islands and warning signage; Eliminating blind spots; Adding pedestrian signals; Adjusting signal timing with leading pedestrian intervals or exclusive phases; Improving lighting;  =Installing physical barriers to deter jaywalking. The city also continues to improve sidewalk accessibility by removing obstacles, creating new pedestrian pathways, promoting barrier-free access, and enhancing safe walking routes to and from schools, all aimed at building a more pedestrian-friendly environment.
